Visit Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Home > News > Visit Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Postata il: 13 novembre 2014

The way we perceive the natural landscape is influenced by the artworks that we have seen, especially the ones we now consider icons, as some Renaissance paintings. This applies in particular to the Senese landscapes that depict people in harmony with nature, charming glimpses that we find intact in Val d’Orcia, an area that has inspired many artists of the Renaissance and beyond.

UNESCO, ten years ago, decided to include the valley among the World Heritage Sites, an event that we celebrate with an itinerary through the most beautiful villages of this area and a series of events planned from 15th to 17th November.

Museums special openings and exclusive tours in Val d’Orcia

The first event is scheduled on Saturday 15th November at Parco Museo Minerario in Abbadia San Salvatore, where it will be presented a book about Giorgio Santi, chemist and traveler who in the XVIII century wrote accurate travel diaries about Monte Amiata. This event is an opportunity to visit the Museo Minerario and stroll in the village of Abbadia.

On the same day at 5:30 pm in Pienza there will be the poetry reading “Dell’ombra e della luce” to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the great poet Mario Luzi, the location is the Fabbriceria of Pienza Cathedral, the ideal setting to combine the evocative power of poetry with the beauty of a town known as the pearl of the Renaissance.

On Saturday and Sunday the following museums will be open as part of initiatives that promote Val d’Orcia World Heritage site: the Borgia Palace and the Diocesan Museum in Pienza, the Civic and Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art and Archaeological Collection in Montalcino, the land of the famous Brunello, one of the most prestigious wines of Tuscany.

The main event, however, is on Sunday 16th November, as it will be possible to follow an itinerary that includes Bagno Vignoni, renowned destination for its thermal waters, to arrive, through vineyards and olive groves, in the heart of the Val d’Orcia countryside.

The route is 6 kilometers long and no trekking skills are required; all participants will be able to admire the town of Vignoni Alto and the panoramic view on Amiata. The last stop of the tour is the Parco dei Mulini, an evidence of the essential role played by mills in the past in this part of Tuscany.

Reservations are required within Friday 14th November at 6.00 pm, calling the phone number 0577-898303 or sending an email to info@parcodellavaldorcia.com.

In San Quirico d’Orcia will take place on Monday 17th November the ceremony celebrating the Val d’Orcia heritage, at this meeting will be present authorities, journalists and scholars, from 9.00 am to 2.30 pm at Palazzo Chigi. The province of Siena is always full of events and places to explore, let tempted yourself by the Val d’Orcia and you’ll see why so many artists have been left fascinated.
