The emerging phenomenon of slow tourism got immediate success in Siena, a town that due to its features is easily walkable and is an art city with many beautiful hidden glimpses, places lesser known by tourists and urban trails in the past have been sets of historical events.
For these reasons, we recommend to join the National Day of Urban Trekking on October 31st which will be held in 37 Italian cities including Siena, first town to have joined and promoted this wonderful initiative.
Would you like to know what the urban trekking is? It’s easy: it is a sporting activity that combines wellness, culture and ecology, a sport that can be practiced by anyone regardless of the weather, because unlike the naturalistic trekking you explore a town and even non-conventional venues.
To follow urban trekking itinerary you need a comfortable pair of shoes, a lot of curiosity and a strong passion for walking: the tours last on average a couple of hours and this year there is a common trait in all the towns participating in the event, a tribute to the Great War on the occasion of the centenary.
In Siena can be visited the Stanze della Memoria, located at the Casermetta of Via Malavolti 9 and the Sala dei Ricordi at Asilo Monumento, two stages of the route that will start in the main center, Piazza del Campo, and will continue at the Synagogue and along the alleys of Siena where are visible the bullet marks in the stones of the buildings, traces of all kinds dating back to World War I, event that has upset the lives of many people.
The route length is 3 km and departure times of guided tours are 5.15 pm – 5.30 pm – 5:45 pm and 6:00 pm, the first tour is also available in English. Reservations will be open from Monday 27th October, you have to call the phone number 0577/271510.
The Urban Trekking is an original way to visit a tourist destination and at the same time taking long walks enriched by the history of the places, the artistic wonders of Siena and the anecdotes told by expert guides.
Plan your weekend in the end of October from now to in the capital of eco-friendly tourism!
