Looking for the authentic roots of a sport such as cycling in a charming area as Chianti in Tuscany is a mission for true cycling enthusiasts who join every year L’Eroica event.
This cycling race is taking place since 1997 on the first Sunday of October and features routes that cover the white roads of Chianti, Valdarbia and Valdorcia; Eroica is open to all but only cyclists who participate with a vintage bicycle can win the title of “heroic.”
How to attend Eroica in Gaiole in Chianti
L’Eroica isn’t a competition but a celebration of cycling and sustainable lifestyle that includes 4 different routes of increasing difficulty and a series of events in Gaiole in Chianti starting from 1st October. This year there will be a large number of women, such as the champions Morena Tartagni, winner of numerous cycling races in the 60s and 70s, Alessandra Cappellotto, the first Italian rider to become World Champion in 1997, and Marianne Vos, who has won twice the Giro d’Italia and will reach Gaiole in Chianti on the afternoon of Saturday 4th October with her team.
On Thursday 2nd October at 3:00 pm will open the museum of vintage bicycles at Cantine Ricasoli, an opportunity to see bicycle models used in the early XX century, while on Friday 3rd it will be possible to book a Chianti Wine Tour, a guided visit through vineyards, wineries and glasses of red wine, departing from Gaiole with coach.
We suggest you to join the guided tour of the wine cellars of Brolio Castle (on Friday at 5:30 pm, the tour will be in English language) because the private residence of the Ricasoli family it will be exceptionally open to the public and is included a dinner at Osteria del Castello with a local products based menu.
The main day of the event, Sunday 5th October, there will be the 4 routes and, at the same time, it will start the “Tour of the refreshment points” by private bus and together with an expert guide, a route entirely dedicated to the discovery of the scenic wonders of Chianti and the unique Tuscan flavors with tastings of local delicacies such as ribollita, spelt tart, local cold cuts and cheeses.
L’Eroica isn’t only an important event for cyclists and bicycle lovers, but also for anyone who wants to experience genuine emotions and following an example of a sustainable lifestyle.
