How to spend the Easter weekend in Siena

The Easter holidays are a nice reason to plan a holiday in Siena and take advantage of the spring weather, an invitation to contemplate the landscape, take stunning pics and spend pleasant moments with your loved ones.

Last days of Lorenzetti exhibition

Due to its great success, the exhibition on Ambrogio Lorenzetti has been extended until April 8th, so these are the last days to see the restored frescoes and works on loan from the most prestigious museums in the world (Louvre, National Gallery, Uffizi Galleries, Vatican Museums, Yale).

This brilliant artist has revolutionized the concept of the ar paintings and has described his epoch (the XIV century) with his works as few others.

The exhibition is housed by Santa Maria della Scala and includes other venues where works by Lorenzetti are kept: the Basilica of San Francesco, the Church of Sant’Agostino and Public Palace.

Museo dell’Acqua, a lesser known gem in Siena

If you are in Siena this weekend, visit a place that is often not mentioned by tourist guides, the Water Museum, open from Saturday 31st March to 2nd April, a museum dedicated to the so-called Bottini and the sources of Siena, the ingenious system that supplied water to this town, located far from lakes and rivers.

Easter Monday in Buonconvento aboard Treno Natura

Easter Monday is traditionally dedicated to out-of-town trips, so we suggest visiting a town near Siena on board an “unusual” means of transport: a steam train! Treno Natura is the name of the initiative that for many years allows you to make short trips on a steam locomotive, watching the landscape from a different perspective.

The destination of Easter Monday will be Buonconvento, where the antique fair “Cose del Passato” takes place; take the chance to shop and spend an amazing day in the heart of Tuscany.

Spiritual itinerary to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo

 

Easter is also a chance to get to know the most important churches and join spiritual paths, such as the one that starts at Sant’Antimo Abbey on Friday 30th March, a precious opportunity to visit all the church and cloister environments.

The Abbey, near Montalcino, is one of the most evocative places in Tuscany and all the celebrations in progress for the Holy Week are officiated in Gregorian chant.
