The Siena territory boasts intense flavors, exciting scents and bright colors, unique features of a natural masterpiece: on many occasions we talked about food and wine, typical restaurants and tasty dishes to eat on holiday.
Many travelers, however, want to buy the products directly by farmers and winemakers who personally guarantee the authenticity and the fragrance of their products.
So we have selected some farmhouses in the province of Siena where to buy local speciies, preferably to taste during your stay or to take as souvenir, as a reminder of a tradition of excellence that all the world envies to Tuscany.
This post is dedicated in particular to cheese factories and olive oil producers, two delicacies of the Siena area that make it rich even a quick meal.
Cheese tasting tour near Siena
After wine, Tuscan cheese is an emblem of the local tradition, because the Siena hills are full of herds and dairies where cheese making has been handed down from generation to generation.
Among these we point out the Cugusi dairy, operating since 1962, located on the hills around the beautiful Montepulciano and Pienza, the Renaissance jewel, so it is also an excuse to visit these two towns.
At this farm you can join cheese tastings that include pairings with jam and honey, and glasses of Rosso di Montepulciano wine.
An exquisite chance, because near the dairy you can admire the Temple of San Biagio!
In 45 minutes you can discover the history of Cugusi, thanks to a video that tells their origins, and appreciate the tastiness of five kinds of pecorino cheese and ricotta, that you can also buy on site.
To book a guided tasting send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0578/757558. Alternatively, you can arrange an outdoor picnic near the farm in an area set up for visitors, available from April to October.
The dairy La Fonte is located in Torre a Castello, surrounded by the scenic Crete Senesi, and we recommend to the cheese with walnut leaves which has an incomparable taste.
La Fonte offers many other kinds of cheese and you can buy them in the nearest retailer who is the Agricultural Consortium of Siena, at Via Pianigiani.
In this period it is very nice to visit the Crete Senesi to take pictures or just to enjoy the view, for this you should go to the dairy store, open in the afternoon from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
We are sure you won’t forget to celebrate the exquisiteness of these speciies!
Record-breaking Olive oil in the Terre di Siena
The protagonist of Tuscan gastronomical tradition is without doubt the extra virgin olive oil, so we include in this itinerary also the olive groves where to find this precious product.
Recently there have been two prestigious awards that confirm the unique quality of olive oil in this area: the first prize in the Fruttato Leggero category at the XXIV edition of the Ercole Olivario competition, held in Perugia, assigned to Podere Ricavo, and the Sirena D’Oro, attributed to Oil DOP Terre di Siena of Azienda Carraia Bardi Franco di Trequanda.
Podere Ricavo di Buoni o del Buono Maria Pia is set in the countryside of Cetona, and has maintained the classic processing methods, supplemented by the agronomic innovations that determine the high quality of the finished product.
Franco Bardi is one of the greatest experts in the production of olive oil that is often interviewed and contacted for advice and suggestions.
Buy the DOP extra virgin olive oil bottles at these farms is a way to bring with you the most genuine fruit of this land, ideal for seasoning any dish and make a meal a sublime delight for the palate.
