October is the month in which the colors of the Tuscan landscape change and the days get shorter, but it is also the right to take a trip to Siena and participate in many different activities.
Waiting for the National Urban Trekking Day on 31st October (event we mentioned also in the post Walking tour in Siena off the tourist track), we inform you about the meaning of urban trekking and why is worth joining it in Siena.
First of all, urban trekking is a soft sport that everyone can practice; it is a form of eco-friendly tourism, because is focused on the urban centers but favors lesser-known paths and allows you to discover the hidden corners of art cities.
Secondly, urban trekking is an activity that gives many benefits to body and mind, just know that walking for at least 20 minutes at a time allows you to burn about 150 kilocalories, eliminate stress and anxiety while admiring special places in a different way compared to a standard tour. The guided tours, scheduled on October 31st, ranging from 1 to 4 hours in length; joining a tour will help to consume a minimum of 450 kilocalories up to a maximum of 1800 kilocalories.
The additional benefit of this activity is that it can be practiced at any time of day and in all weather conditions. On the occasion of the Jubilee, the 2016 edition will focus on the theme of mercy with an itinerary of 5 km, lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes.
These will be the stages of the guided tour in Siena on 31st October: at Piazza del Campo the expert guides will tell you the story of San Bernardino and the origins of the first Jubilee, proclaimed in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII. In Piazza del Duomo you can visit the museum complex of Santa Maria della Scala, once a place of shelter for the needy and pilgrims, continuing thereafter towards the Arciconfraternita di Misericordia di Siena, which houses the relics belonged to the Prophet Brandano.
The following stages will be the Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi and Church of San Raimondo al Refugio, a little-known gem where is hosted a series of paintings dedicated to San Galgano. The tour guides will reveal you a lot of oddities about these places and will accompany you to the end of the itinerary at the Basilica of San Francesco, which houses a portrait of Boniface VIII by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
The Urban Trekking Day is a nice pretext to come to Siena and savor the pleasures of slow walk, focusing you on a stunning scenario. The tours will start at 3:00 pm but only the last one is in English language.
