There are many reasons to visit San Gimignano, the medieval town renowned for its towers. A common trait with Siena is that both are Unesco World Heritage Sites, in fact many tourists staying in Siena for a long weekend take the chance to go even to the “medieval Manhattan”.
Today, however, we suggest an unusual event, which on Saturday 27th June will liven up the streets, the courtyards and the squares of the historical center: Nottilucente, the white night of San Gimignano, dedicated this year to the topic “change”.
Performances, concerts, exhibitions, readings and workshops will have the task of telling the extraordinary uniqueness of this town and to show the value of art and the importance of craftsmanship, pillars that underpin much of the Tuscan traditions.
Nottilucente will begin at 5:00 pm and will finish late at night, we recommend some events to who wishes to visit San Gimignano during the white night: photographic exhibitions are an essential part of the event, including for example Rua De Saudade 22 by Adriano Benocci at Sala Cultura at Via San Giovanni and Cucinarte at Porta San Giovanni, then there will be workshops for children, who can learn the art of painting and juggling.
At the Sala Tamagni there will be a movie and short films screening up to 2:00 am, such as Memoria oltre la Toscana by Irene Lupi and Finding Vivian Maier by John Maloof and Charlie Siskel.
The fine wine of San Gimignano is of course one of the stars of the evening, so you shouldn’t miss the wine tasting at Museo del Vino inside the Rocca di Montestaffoli.
At Piazza Cisterna you can watch performances by clowns, trapeze artists, acrobats and jugglers from around the world, gathered in Big Bang Circus, a project of the festival Circomondo.
The premiere of the play Metamorfosi, based on Ovid poem and produced by Fortebraccio Teatro, will be staged at Piazza Duomo at 10:45 pm; finally, the last event will be the breakfast, served by the pastry chefs of the House of Detention Ranza of San Gimignano at Porta San Giovanni from 2:30 am.
