The Tuscan hills are characterized by an extraordinary charm and invite travelers who enjoy the beautiful landscapes and romantic horizons.
To watch the natural show that takes place in the countryside and in the alleys of Siena too, we invite you to follow the special guided trekking routes scheduled in February, culminating in the third edition of Terre di Siena Ultramarathon, on 26th February 2017.
These events are classified as sports tourism, an emerging phenomenon, which we mentioned in the post Sport tourism events in Siena , characterized by a balance between promotion of the territory and sporting activities.
It’s not essential to be marathon runners to join these activities: we recommend some itineraries less challenging but very rewarding, a number of excursions different from the usual.

The excursion scheduled on Saturday 25th February at 9:00 am it will let you visit a venue unknown to tourists, the stables where the horses participating in the Palio live.
The total length of the route is 7 km and the arrival point is to Milani stables in the Sienese hills, at 12:30 pm. Start at the parking exchanger in Tufi, in the southern area of Siena, from where a shuttle bus will go to the Hermitage of Lecceto; from here you will walk in the woods of holm oak, climb the hill and arrive at the Belcaro Castle, a medieval fortress that today serves as the guard at this ocean of green, just a few kilometers out of town.
At the Stables, after the guided tour, you can have a lunch with a menu based on typical local dishes, and then return to Siena by the shuttle bus at 3:00 pm.
On the same day you can choose to join a guided tour to discover the water sources of Siena: the tour lasts two hours and is entirely dedicated to the history of the main water sources of the town, such as Fonte Gaia and Fontebranda, described by expert guides who will explain the origins and importance of these places, lesser known by tourists.
This guided tour is scheduled at 10:30 am and at 2:30 pm, furthermore, after the visit there will be a tasting of food speciies of Siena at the Market Square, the best way to celebrate the uniqueness of this town!
To book your participation is necessary to call the number 0577.271567 or write an email to siena@uisp.it.

If all these sporting initiatives make your mouth water, take the opportunity to enjoy excellent dishes cooked by Sienese chefs at Ultragustando, the event that will take place on Saturday 25th from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Market Square.
This is an event conceived for marathon runners, though, at a cost of 5 euros per serving, everyone can taste the dishes (specifically Cecco soup, pasta with artichokes or Cinta Senese bacon and fried vegetables) prepared by the chefs from Osteria il Ristoro in Ville di Corsano (Monteroni d’Arbia), the Fòri Porta and the Grotta del Gallo Nero in Siena.
The marathon itself, however, is only for experienced runners: there are three competitive routes with finish line at Piazza del Campo, the difference lies in the path length, ranging from 50 km (starting from San Gimignano) to the shorter path of 18 km (starting from Monteriggioni), and the intermediary of 32 km, starting from Colle Val d’Elsa.
Follow the Ultramarathon is a different way to feel part of a unique experience, because the path, the walk and the ride make us feel the magic atmosphere of Siena hills.
