Have you ever heard about marzuolo truffles? This variety is lesser known and prized compared to white truffle, a typical excellence of the Crete Senesi, and is also known as “bianchetto”.
Unlike the most popular truffle variety, whose picking period is autumn, you can pick marzuolo in March, so there is a special event to celebrate it, the Marzuolo Truffle Festival on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd March in San Giovanni d’Asso, a small town not far from Siena.
If you wish to join a gastronomical tour you could spend a day or two visiting this town and tasting several truffles based dishes.
As soon as you arrive you will see stands and craft shops where to buy truffles and other food speciies and products made by local craftsmen.
At 11:15 am the Bussino del Gusto will starts its journey: is a guided tour by bus dedicated to the surrounding vineyards and other small companies, allowing the encounter between tourists and local producers, which will offer a tasting of Senese food delights.
Booking is required and the end of the tour is scheduled at 1:15 pm.
There will also be an opportunity to know more about the history of San Giovanni d’Asso joining the visit to the Park of Pava with archaeologists who will guide you through a typical medieval forest of the Asso Valley.
If you are curious about truffle hunting, you could follow “Tartufaio per un giorno”, the guided truffle hunting with expert “tartufai” (truffle hunters), organized by the Associazione Tartufai Senesi.
The journey through genuine flavors continues at the castle of San Giovanni d’Asso with a guided tasting of chocolate and marzuolo truffle combined with a selection of spirits.
In the evening, at 8:00 pm, is scheduled a tantalizing dinner-theater show, “Sottili ammaestramenti” by Massimiliano Poli, at the Truffle Museum (reservation is required calling the phone number 0577/803268 or by email museodeltartufo@museisenesi.org – teatroecenaalmuseo@gmail.com).
On Sunday 22 you can get to San Giovanni d’Asso starting from Siena at 9:00 am by the historic steam train, which will leave at 4:30 pm to return to Siena, an exciting experience to travel quietly and enjoy the landscape.
We are confident that this festival is really interesting not only for fans of Tuscan cuisine but also for those who want to spend a different kind of stay.
