There are traditions that we have to honor without making any changes over time; others traditions may acquire, due to technology, further prestige without losing their own value.
One of the events that forecast Christmas in Siena is Mercato nel Campo (Market at Piazza del Campo), a Medieval handicraft market that in the XIV century was the beating heart of the local commercial activities.
Today this market isn’t only a fair, but is an authentic immersion into the atmosphere of a medieval village, since the trades are almost identical: in Piazza del Campo you’ll meet goldsmiths, tailors, antique dealers, tanners and glassmakers. Furthermore there will be the enogastronomical area with wine, olive oil, chocolate, honey and cold cuts.
This year, those who visit the market will help to revive the tradition by telling it on social networks and joining in a contest: who will post on Instagram the 3 best pictures of this event with the hashtag #mercatonelcampo, will become the ambassador of Siena’s handicraft and the pictures will be the cover images of the official Facebook Page.
The stands will be 140 and will be open on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, a nice chance to make gifts and take advantage of the weekend to come to Siena.
This edition of Mercato nel Campo will also be inspired by the topic of EXPO 2015 “Feed the planet / Nutrire il pianeta, energia alla vita”, which will also involve the local restaurants where you can enjoy, on the same days, the top dishes of Senese cuisine.
To make this meeting with the best craftsmen even more appetizing, are scheduled side events such as “Mangiamondo”, an art installation by Estrosi collective to be held in the square, and the exhibition “Rosalba Parrini – Battles, games and stories”, dedicated to the author of the Drappellone (the rag) of July 2014 edition of Palio, a collection of sketches and images on display at the Magazzini del Sale of Public Palace from December 8th.
Come and meet the craftsmen in the venue where the unique products and the food delights of Tuscany are promoted since Middle Age, it will be an excellent preview of Christmas holidays.
