Guided tours of the Town Hall’s hidden rooms

Home > News > Guided tours of the Town Hall’s hidden rooms
Postata il: 14 March 2014

Look at familiar places with a different gaze; this is one of the wishes that come true in Siena, if you have the curiosity and attention to explore contradas, squares and historic buildings during your stay.

We advise an initiative that represents this approach and will be held exclusively on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd of March: the reopening of hidden rooms of the Town Hall (Palazzo Comunale) , available for visits only by guided tours by appointment.

These rooms are generally closed to the public because they are assigned to the administrative activities of the municipal offices and here are preserved valuable artworks that can finally be seen closely. The Town Hall (also known as Palazzo Pubblico) is one of the Siena attractions that we have mentioned more often and is a landmark for every tourist, because is located in Piazza del Campo next to the equally famous Torre del Mangia.

Besides the Civic Museum, the Palace is interesting from the architectural point of view, because it reflects the various periods of construction (it was finished in 1310 approximately) and is a testimony of the Siena history, because here the Government of Nine ruled the city, a period of great prosperity for Siena.

The 6 secret rooms that you can visit host the sculptures attributed to Giovanni Pisano, the frescoes by masters such as Sano di Pietro, Lorenzo di Pietro known as Vecchietta and Giovanni Antonio Bazzi known as Sodoma; golden funds by XIV century artists such as Lippo Memmi, and masterpieces dated back to XVII century (Domenico and Rutilio Manetti, Deifebo Burbarini, Astolfo Petrazzi, Bernardino Mei, Francesco Rustici).

We recommend booking a tour as early as possible because places are limited to 35 people for each visit, and the timetable is: 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:30 am, 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm, and 6.00 pm. Contacts for info and reservations are as follows: 0577/286300 and sienastanzesegrete@operalaboratori.com

The secret rooms await you in Siena, we are confident that the incredible history of this town will be revealed to your eyes.
