June 21st is the longest day of the year, so we are thinking about how to celebrate the arrival of summer in Siena. This town, as always, offers original and engaging proposals for Senese people and tourists who want to come next weekend.
On Saturday 21st June there are many extraordinary events, first of all the day of the solstice coincides with the European Music Festival (also known as Fête de la Musique), a festival that takes place every year at the begin of the summer across Europe, including free concerts in theaters, museums and squares.
The program is extended so we advise the main venues, an opportunity to visit the historic center and admire the most enchanting glimpses of Siena from another perspective: the Civic Museum, for example, will be open until midnight and here will take place a concert at Sala del Mappamondo, while the Town Hall and the Torre del Mangia will be open to visitors by guided tours, a unique chance to see the most enchanting side of the town.
This festival lets allow you to listen live performances by music school students as the kids of Rinaldo Franci Institute, which will run from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm a “musical walk”, in other words a journey through four centuries of music, from XVII century to XX century; at Accademia Musicale Chigiana, a historic landmark in town, you can visit the Museum of Musical Instruments, useful to know more about the evolution of playing from the Middle Age to the present day.
The Senese squares will be enliven by joyful sounds, such as Piazza del Campo where will take place a flash mob at 6:00 pm with the Peter Pan Orchestra of Siena Jazz, at Piazza Matteotti will be the Rock Academy Day, a series of performances by local musicians of the Siena Music Academy, while at Piazza Salimbeni at 7:00 pm there will be a collective toast to celebrate this long day of art and creativity.
On Saturday is also scheduled the event Lux in Nocte, the opening of the Monumental Complex of the Cathedral, where you can follow itineraries and shows dedicated to the most famous artistic masterpieces of Siena.
The “Notturni dell’Opera”, in fact, are a mix of classical music and dance performances that will transform the museum into an exclusive stage. Join breathtaking shows in places that usually host exhibitions or are only partially accessible is a special feature of Siena, an additional reason to enjoy the summer solstice, the ideal way to start your next vacation.
