If you like to visit a medieval town, the most suitable chance is to attend a historical reenactment, an event that involves most of the inhabitants and allows you to join important events happened many centuries ago, as well as a better appreciation of local traditions.
On this occasion, we suggest to make a stop in San Quirico d’Orcia, a XIII century village where there will be the festival Il Bianco e L’Azzurro on 17th and 18th May. In brief, the festival consists of a flag-throwers show, a series of archery competitions and a dinner in the medieval style including theatrical interludes.
The festival is organized by the Canneti district, in fact its characteristic colors (white and blue) give the title to this event; the start is scheduled for Saturday at 7:00 pm with the performance of the young locals bearers, drummers and archers, followed by the murder at the banquet show, a mystery dinner party.
The banquet will have a menu based on typical medieval dishes and will be served with wooden cutlery, and earthenware plates and glasses, furthermore during the dinner the actors will perform a murder and you’ll have to find the guilty.
A surprising tasty dinner, recommended if you want to spend the evening in a funny way.
On Sunday 18th May at 10:00 am there will be the competition of archery organized by the Medieval Archers League (AML) at Horti Leonini, an elegant Italian-style garden built in the XVI century and at 4:30 pm the flag-throwers and the musicians will perform a show in the square of San Quirico d’Orcia.
The festival will end with dinner at 7:45 pm at the Porta Nuova area with a typical Val d’Orcia dinner menu: handmade Pici, meat sauce, selection of cold meats and cheeses, grilled meats and red wine.
