The art of dance meets the public on 29th April, the International Dance Day, an initiative conceived in 1982 by the CID (Conseil International de la Danse) of UNESCO, for the anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), the creator of modern ballet, to promote this art in the world and achieve an audience different than the usual, for example people who do not usually go to the theater and attend dance performances.
Siena has joined the International Dance Day preparing a series of events involving schools and dance companies which will perform in different points of the historic center; we suggest to enjoy the preview on Sunday 27th April, a funny flash mob at Piazza del Campo from 18:00 onwards, to dance all together and celebrate the charm and magic of the dance.
Staying in Siena at the end of April is a good idea because you can take advantage of 1st May (a public holiday in Italy), an amazing period to visit the most peculiar towns in Tuscany.
To know more about the universal language of dance, that consists in movement, theatrical performance and rhythm you can follow the events of Tuesday 29th April: in the morning the performance of SienaScuolaDanza for school students, useful to recommend this activity to all-aged people because involves a significant well-being; on the afternoon, at 5:00 pm, there will be SienaVetrinaDanza, a series of performances just inside the shops in the center of Siena, unusual venues where you will see shows of the most talented local dance companies.
Furthermore, the event SienaMediaDanza, a series of dance videos, exhibitions of pictures and items related to this art hosted by stores and supermarkets; in other words, the whole city will dance, a show that ties the eternal charm of the town Palio with the art which stands for elegance, balance and brilliance, just as the masterpieces that you will encounter walking through the contradas.
